St. Nicholas of Myra was the bishop of what is now the Turkish province of Antalya between the 3rd and 4th centuries, and is probably one of the most popular and well-known saints. December the 6th is widely regarded throughout the Christian world as his day of remembrance. Since the early Middle Ages, many churches have been consecrated in his name, a mark of his popularity through the ages, and in a recently discovered large manuscript of sacred plays dating back to the 12th century, there are four plays on the theme of St. Nicholas alone.
Sinterklaas, or Santa Claus, is a hugely popular children’s festival that takes place mainly in Holland and Belgium. Every year the arrival of Sinterklaas is celebrated in many places all over Europe. The Sinterklaas Festival ends on the 5th of December (or 6th of December in Belgium) the “Pakjesavond” or packaging evening with the “het zetten van de schoen” or putting out of your shoes for St. Nicholas, who fills them with toys as you sleep. To celebrate the day, there are many Sinterklaaslieder, or Santa Claus Songs, which are joyously sung by young and old alike.
