If those old boards could speak, they would tell long tales of all the beautifully staged works which resounded through the theatre, year after year.
As the lighting in the auditorium dims, a hush falls over the audience. Behind the scenes, however, the hustle and bustle signals the start of the show. The technicians are preparing for the first scene change, the stage manager calls the soloists for their first entry, costume and makeup are preparing for the first costume change, and from afar, muffled tones can be heard of the chorus master warming-up the chorus for their first entry.
As the interval draws near, two ushers share a joke in the foyer, and the last drinks and horderves are being prepared for the guests. In the auditorium, the singers deliver their arias with powerful, heart-breaking voices, while in the orchestra pit, the conductor drives the musicians as the music rises and falls, painting the story. Most eyes in the audience are fixed on the spectacle unfolding on stage, while some are closed, allowing the music alone to sweep over them.
No matter whether the production is well received or not, the music, the arias, the ensembles, many of which have been adored by young and old for centuries, transport the audience musically and emotionally, and as they leave the theatre, the experience of the opera remains with them, carries them home, and stays with them for days, weeks, months, even years. This is the magic of opera.
