Chamber music was originally a secular alternative to sacred music, written for the Prince’s ’chamber’ or court, rather than the church. The term chamber music continued to develop through the Baroque Period, and began to describe small instrumental music. Through the Classical Period into the Romantic Period, the genre became more and more virtuosic, showcasing the skills and talents of all the musicians.
Originally, chamber works involved between two and nine musicians, but from the post-romantic, Classical Modern era through to today’s Contemporary Music, these numbers have gone up, and chamber music can involve larger forces. Today we have chamber orchestras and chamber choirs, and with larger ensembles, terms such as "chamber music sound" are used to denote a more intimate timbre.
