Bei der literarischen Gattung „Nänie“ handelt es sich um einen Klagegesang aus der klassischen Antike. Brahmsʼ Nänie op. 84 ist ein Requiem auf den Maler Anselm Feuerbach (1829–1880), den Johannes Brahms außerordentlich schätzte. Nach einem ersten Entwurf im Sommer 1880 vertonte Brahms Schillers Gedicht „Nenie“ (erst bei den Druckvorbereitungen änderte Brahms die Schreibweise in „Nänie“) jedoch erst ein Jahr später, als er sich in Preßbaum bei Wien aufhielt.
Die erste Aufführung am 3. Dezember 1881 in Zürich dirigierte Brahms selbst. Das Werk ist Henriette Feuerbach, der Mutter des Künstlers, gewidmet.
