Hector Berlioz wrote his 'Grande Symphonie Funèbre et Triomphale' in 1840, for the ceremonies celebrating the 10th anniversary of the July Revolution. The first part, the 'Marche Funèbre' (Funeral March), was performed in the procession towards the 'Place de la Bastille’, Berlioz walking in front of the musicians. The second movement, with its splendid trombone solo, commemorates the victims of that Revolution. The 'Apothéose' (Apotheosis), the third and final movement of this original wind band symphony, was performed while the mortal remains of the victims were buried under the Bastille Column.
