Fibich spent most of his life in Prague, where he was Kapellmeister, choirmaster and dramaturge of the Provisional Theater (later the National Theater). In terms of composition, he was based on German Romanticism, in particular on Robert Schumann. Zdeněk Fibich was also the creator of a new musical form, the melodrama, which uses music and spoken word. His "Hippodamie" trilogy is the largest and most successful stage melodrama in music history to date. Fibich was a prolific composer, and his songs, 350 piano pieces, operas and symphonic works are well respected. In total, he composed over 600 works.
