Tallis held many important positions including at Dover College, Waltham Abbey, Canterbury Cathedral and at the Chapel Royal. As the official Royal Composer, he composed for Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I. In order to avoid religious controversy, and protect his career, he remained an unreformed Catholic his whole life, as did William Byrd.
