Thomas currently resides in London, teaching at the Centre for Young Musicians at Morley College and conducting both the Chamber Academy and Fortismere Community Orchestras.
Thomas’s work as a composer took him to the States in January 2001, where he performed his ‘Music for Four Cellos’, written specially for the occasion. Performances were held in Ann Arbor and Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, with the contemporary ensemble Brave New Works. The following year, he was commissioned to write transcriptions of Bach’s Art of the Fugue for the same ensemble. In addition, he wrote a new piece for the ensemble entitled Prelude and Scherzo.
Thomas is also a member of Ensemble Fyn in Denmark for whom he is currently writing a piece for solo Cello and ensemble, to be premiered later in the year.
His solo engagements have included recitals in London and the US. Concerto engagements include performances of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto in Illinois, the Dvorak Concerto and Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations in London and the Schumann Concerto in Bucharest.
Recent commissions include incidental music to Coriolanus, Hamlet and a new play by DMW Greer entitled Alice Virginia which starred Susannah York. Thomas also provided the soundtrack to an animation film by Asya Lukin about the Russian absurdist poet Daniil Kharms.
Thomas’s teaching schedule has lead to the creation of numerous pieces written for young musicians, particularly string players. He has recently released a collection of pieces for beginner string players under the name Vamoosh, which can be bought online, or from various music shops across the country. He has also arranged and composed over 100 pieces for various educational ensembles including symphony orchestras.
