Tchaikovsky’s emotional, romantic, playful Russian tradition, combined with Western musical structure, create a unique musical world. While the famous “Group of Five” (the “Novators” or “The Mighty Handful”), consisting of Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, Mussorgsky and Rimski-Korsakov) were making waves, Tchaikovsky chose to continue the Anton Rubinstein school, and he was also close friends with the Norwegian romantic giant Edvard Grieg.
