His Life

Otakar Ševčík was born into a humble family of church cantors. His father introduced him to music as a boy, teaching the young Otakar the basics of singing, piano and violin. After graduating from the Prague Conservatoire, he enjoyed a career as a highly sought-after solo violinist, and from 1870 he also worked as a violin professor, teaching at the Mozarteum Graz, the Prague Conservatoire, the Kiev Conservatoire and the Vienna Academy for Music and Performing Arts. In the 1920s, he also taught in the USA, in Ithaca, Chicago and New York.

His Method

The Ševčík method brought new, unprecedented and innovative ideas to the world of violin technique, the semitone system for beginners, systematic, step-by-step solutions to technical problems, detailed intonation exercises, analytical studies of concertos, and much more. His method is so versatile, that it can be used for all stringed instruments. Ševčík’s pedagogical work is divided into 26 volumes.
