Schneider was born in Göttingen in 1964. He graduated from the Alte Kantonsschule Aarau. From 1985 to 1993 he studied musicology, modern history and art history at the University of Zurich. At the same time he studied composition with Dimitri Terzakis at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Bern. He was a master student of Edisson Wassiljewitsch Denissow in 1991 and 1993.
He worked as a music critic and journalist for the Aargauer Zeitung. From 1999 to 2001 he was a publisher at PAN Verlag in Zurich. From 2001 to 2006 he also headed the public relations department of the Museum der Kulturen Basel. Schneider has been managing director of the Schweizer Kulturvermittlung Künstlerhaus Boswil since 2006.
He is on the boards of several music associations.
