Marius Bazu, born in Cluj-Napoca (Romania), first studied violin, viola and piano and, after graduating from high school in 1969, moved to the Musikhochschule where he majored in conducting in Emil Simon’s master class. In 1973 Marius Bazu received his conducting diploma with the highest mark.
He owed further inspiration to his attendance of the master classes of Arwid Janssons (1972 in Weimar) and Sergiu Celibidache (1978 in Bucharest for conducting and 1983 in Mainz for music phenomenology).
From 1973 to 1975 he was conductor of the Satu Mare Symphony Orchestra and from 1975 to 1983 artistic director of the Klausen Philharmonic Orchestra. He received teaching assignments in the orchestra class of the Musikhochschule and during this time conducted all Romanian symphony orchestras as a guest conductor.
He has lived in Germany since 1983 and has since been artistic director of the Hamburg Youth Orchestra. He has been a guest conductor in Germany, France and Romania and has also conducted numerous orchestral and conducting courses. He also conducted the Bundesschulmusikerorchester, which was founded in autumn 1995. In 1990 Marius Bazu was appointed professor of orchestra conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Hamburg.
