Donned in the press as “the last titan of the organ symphony”, come browse our sheet music and scores, and explore this most famous aspect of the legendary French organ master, and all his other wonderful works today.
Marcel Dupré (1886–1971) is known mainly for his organ works, many of these works have the flavour of the brilliant improviser, and some are even improvisations he chose to write down later. His choral music and chamber music is less well known, and unfortunately his orchestral works are rather hard to come by.
As a professor, Dupré was in high demand, and among his many famous students were Olivier Messiaen, Jehan Alain , and Jean Guillou. Marcel Dupré’s many teaching books convey his unique style, which helped shape a whole generation of organists. His other editions, especially the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, contain so many editorial notes, that they can almost be considered adaptations.
