Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525*-1597) is undoubtedly one of the most important figures of the Renaissance Period. His pure and technically flawless polyphonic vocal music influenced many generations of musicians from the 16th century right up to modern day. Palestrina served as choirmaster and conductor in many Roman churches. The high points of his career were his placements as Kapellmeister of St. Peter’s Basilica and the Church of St. Apollinaris, which was part of the Collegium Germanicum. The college was a respected institution dedicated to the education of church musicians. Palestrina is buried in an unmarked grave in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Apart from two books of secular madrigals, all of Palestrina’s work is sacred music. He was highly prolific, composing 105 masses, 300 motets, 68 offertories, 35 magnificats, 42 sacred madrigals and at least 75 hymns. The six-part “Missa Papae Marcelli” from 1562-1563 is considered by many to be his most popular work.
