Did you know that Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924) owned a car before the Italian king had one?
Hop in and let our sheet music take you on a journey through the music of Giacomo Puccini!
Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Puccini was born in 1858. Puccini’s early education took place in his hometown of Lucca, which, while not a major centre for opera, was an important hub for church and instrumental music. Among his earliest compositions is a “Messa a quattro voci con orchestra”, which he wrote for his final school concert and is now known as Messa di Gloria.
Admission to the Milan Conservatory gave Puccini the opportunity to immerse himself in the world of opera. He studied composition under Amilcare Ponchielli, a friend of Pietro Mascagni, who was also a student at the conservatory, and attended Amintore Galli’s lectures on the history and philosophy of music. Galli was a prominent music critic, a renowned expert on Wagner, and an advisor to the publishing house Sonzogno.
“How can I compose music if I don’t have a libretto? [...] God touched me with his little finger and said: “Write for the theatre: and only for the theatre.” I followed his advice.”
Puccini dedicated himself entirely to literature and vocal music. He personally oversaw the creation of librettos by his collaborators – particularly Illica and Giacosa – and with Tosca (1900) and Madama Butterfly (1904), he became the richest and most famous composer of his time. He also forged a close working relationship with the publisher Ricordi. Nevertheless, it took some time for musicology to pay serious attention to his works.
The success of his operas is closely tied to the female characters, who play prominent roles and often lend their names to the titles, such as Manon Lescaut or Turandot. Puccini’s great achievement lay in expressing emotions and passions through voice and orchestra in an incredibly detailed and profound way, as evidenced by Tosca’s “Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore”, making him one of the greatest exponents of Verismo.
The international appeal of his operas takes us on an exotic journey to Japan in “Madama Butterfly”, to the United States in “La Fanciulla del West”, and through Italy in “Tosca” to France in La Bohème. Let yourself be carried away on this journey!
