From Cape Town to Cape Canaveral

MacDermot grew up mainly in Toronto, and enjoyed a broad musical education from a young age. He graduated from Bishop’s University in Lennoxville near Quebec with a bachelor’s degree in English and history. From 1950-1953, MacDermot studied organ and composition in Cape Town. The rhythms that he heard in South Africa went on to influence many of his compositions, particularly his “African Waltz”, which received a Grammy Award in 1961.

Six years later, MacDermot’s most famous work, the musical Hair, was completed, which follows a group of hippies navigating the turbulent decade. It is considered a milestone in Pop Music from the 60s. In addition to “Hair”, he composed music for musicals and operas, including many plays by William Shakespeare.

MacDermot died in December 2018, one day before his 90th birthday.
