In the musical world, the term 'romance' means something quite different than what one might assume. The Romance is a polyphonic piece with instrumental accompaniment, and it was so named because it was written in or inspired by Romance language. Browse our sheet music and scores, and explore this wonderful style from the Spanish Renaissance Period with Stretta Music today!

The Tale of the Romance

The musical romance developed from the lyrical romantic poem, which is characterised by an octave meter with assonant rhyming couplets, and tells of real or imaginary deeds. In the world of poetry, there are also romances on other themes, such as satirical or amorous romances.
Most of the Spanish Renaissance romances are preserved in the `Cancionero de Palacio´, where originally 548 pieces were collected, of which 458 have survived. In addition to romances, they also include Villancicos or the so-called `Ensaladas´. Although most of the authors of these works are anonymous, a few composers such as Luys de Narvaez and Juan del Encina are still known today.
