Pierius Magnus is a historical figure from Friesland, a farmer and insurgent against the Dutch oppressors of 1500's. Whether hero or barbarian simply cannot be proven beyond doubt today, but the composer found history simply too exciting not to use it as a source of inspiration. In Pierius Magnus, the national hero is introduced right at the beginning of the work with a capricious theme. Then a moment of peace comes before Pierius and his troops go into battle. The work ends with the back of disillusioned Pierius.
