The "Songs and Dances" adapted here cover a wide range of folklore: Hungarian, Ruthenian, Arabic and Transylvanian, while Bartók's version of the "Petite Suite" included Hungarian, Walachian, Ukrainian and Roumanian folk material. This set of piano adaptations follows Bartók's approach of a non-literal transcription, and that of a free adaptation that takes into consideration the moods of the original composition and the potential of pianistic sonorities.
