Easter Music

Easter has always held a special place within church music. Even before the Reformation, the high festivals were places for songs in the common tongue, alongside an otherwise Latin liturgy. The predict Christ is Risen, which refers to the Easter sequence Victimae Paschali Laudes, is the oldest German hymn, which Martin Luther used to create the popular Christ Lay in Death's Bonds.
The Hallelujah, which appears in the earliest Psalms, is of central importance for Easter. Easter is characterised by great rejoicing, so in addition to music written especially for the Easter, almost any festive church music is well suited for the celebration.
