Programme Notes
Strings for Trumpet, Trombone and Percussion explores the circle of fifths in a continuous string of their harmonic relationships. Moving through six descending cycles, Strings aims to coax the listeners’ ear through the constantly changing harmonic sphere, allowing it to adjust seamlessly through the piece. Its slow ending aims to break down the unity of the ensemble and the listeners’ awareness of a harmonic centre, unravelling its cycles.
Written for a postgraduate final recital for a performance at the RCM, and Contemporary Music in Creation Module.
