Die Kantate "Ärgre dich, o Seele, nicht" BWV 186 ist gewissermaßen das Schwesterwerk der viel bekannteren Kantate "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben" BWV 147. Beide entstanden im Advent 1716 als die beiden letzten Kantaten Bachs für den Weimarer Hof und beide wurden in Bachs erstem Leipziger Jahrgang durch Hinzufügung von Rezitativen und einem großangelegten Choralsatz, der am Ende beider Teile erklingt, für einen anderen Sonntag bearbeitet. Klanglich geprägt wird die Kantate BWV 186 durch das vierstimmige Holzbläserensemble. Der zweimal erklingende Schlusschoral gemahnt bereits an die Eingangschöre der Choralkantaten des zweiten Jahrgangs.

Die Kantate BWV 186 zum 7. Sonntag nach Trinitatis ist eine stark erweiterte Umarbeitung einer Weimarer Adventskantate von 1716. Von der Adventskantate ist nur der Text erhalten, sie konnte aber von Diethard Hellmann aus der späteren Fassung rekonstruiert werden (Carus 31.186).
