Erin's Isle was commissioned by euphonium player Micah Parsons and premiered by him in June 2024. The underlying idea was to write a slow melody with an Irish flavour.
The title is a romantic 19th century name referring to the island of Ireland itself. The work begins with gentle clusters in the piano, below which a tentative theme is heard. This leads to an accompanied cadenza by the soloist, from which the main theme emerges. It is an extended melody that runs through several phrases with a folk-like character. A change of key announces fragments of the theme in the piano, accompanied by interjections from the soloist, and leads to a second cadenza. Finally, the piano takes up the main theme again and the euphonium plays an elaborate countermelody. The opening passage is then heard again and the soloist concludes the work with a short ornamented coda.
