Based on a fragment from his ballet ‘Das Märchen vom Aschenbrödel’, Frank Martin wrote a ‘Morceau de lecture’ for oboe for the ‘Concours national d'exécution musicale de Genève’ in 1941. Without Frank Martin's knowledge, the oboist Heinz Holliger often performed this piece in public. This new arrangement for flute and piano adheres closely to the original, with the exception of a small change that emphasises the climax of the first solo better than in the version for oboe.
