The premiere took place in July 1935, but just before that, on June 24, 1935, Carlos Gardel and his lyricist Alfredo Le Pera tragically died in a plane crash in Colombia. Gardel became a national hero, and the "Día Nacional del Tango" is celebrated worldwide on his birthday, December 11.
