Bruckner's Symphonies

Anton Bruckner: The Man and the Work. (English)

Constantin Floros' thesis in this study is that contrary to what has hitherto been asserted, there is an intimate relation between Bruckner’s sacred music and his symphonies from multiple perspectives: biographical data, sources and influences, the psychology of creation, musical structure, contemporary testimony and reception history.

Sacred Choral Music Bruckner Sacred Choral Music

Bruckner Sacred Choral Music

Great art in a small space – the smaller sacred works reveal the symphonist and composer of demanding orchestral masses from a very personal side. In addition to the well-known motets, the choral book also includes smaller church works such as short a cappella or organ mass settings, simpler liturgical songs and hymns, some with organ, occasionally with trombones. All works are available as individual editions, both printed and digital.

Bruckner Secular Choral Music Bruckner Secular Choral Music

Bruckner Secular Choral Music

For curious choirs: Sometimes classical-romantic, sometimes jazzy – the choral book Bruckner. Secular Choral Music offers exciting discoveries and new arrangements in various levels of difficulty. Anton Bruckner’s secular choral music remains overshadowed by his great symphonies and well-known sacred choral works – unjustly so, as choral experts Simon Halsey and Jan Schumacher demonstrate with their small but excellent selection of choral music to secular texts. All works are available as individual editions, both printed and digital.

Te Deum Te Deum – Arrangement for Small Ensemble

Te Deum – Major Works in Small Ensemble

The Te Deum is now probably the most frequently performed vocal work by Bruckner. The greatest challenges for the choir are the high range and the massive orchestration of this extremely effective piece: Often, the choir must assert itself against a large orchestra in fortissimo! This is significantly easier in the arrangement with two pianos, and the reduction of the sound density reveals compositional structures that might otherwise be lost in the orchestral sound.

Mass in D Minor Mass in D Minor – Arrangement for Small Ensemble

Mass in D Minor – Major Works in Small Ensemble

In the Mass in D Minor from 1864, Bruckner’s symphonic style of mass composition is first evident. Nevertheless, the work does not place the high demands on performers that characterise the two later masses. The present arrangement for soloists, choir, and 2 pianos provides the composition with chamber-music transparency.
